Commissions?

Wed Nov 12, 2008, 10:58 AM
I know I haven't uploaded anything here in a long time. There are two main reasons for that:

1.) I am very sick. I don't mean I have the flu. I have an ongoing problem I don't want to discuss. But I sleep as much as possible because I feel better that way, and I don't get as much done as I used to.

2.) Most of the artwork I've been doing is for a portfolio. While I can upload them and watermark them to prevent theft, I'd really rather not ruin my art that way. So the things I need to keep under wraps have not been added here. Hopefully I will be adding more soon though!

Moving on, I find myself in the unique situation where I would like to have structure (as in being told what to draw for once), and at the same time being in dire need of money to pay bills and pay for medicines I need and such. So my question is, would anyone be interested in commissioning me? I have not taken on a proper commission in awhile due to being cheated out of my payment because I trusted people. THE LAST THREE TIMES I TOOK ON COMMISSIONS. But in this age of computers and up-front payment through paypal, I think I can put my fears to rest. heh.

I have not set prices or anything because I don't even know if anyone will be interested. But my desperate need for some income told me to post this entry. So if you are interested, contact me with what you want, and we will go from there! Any questions, feel free to ask. I'm usually online every day. :)

thank you very much for being so open, i was surprised to have so much feedback being so new here but i like it haha. i've used other sites before and couldn't get anyone to warm up to me

i'm sorry to hear about your condition! and i have been trying to build a strong portfolio as well. the college i'm hoping to attend has an art professor who also did all of my stepdad's tattoos, so i've been going to him for a lot of advice on how to get started (:

i'm really scared that when i actually get out there to look for someone to apprentice me i'll just constantly get rejected. (I've heard it's hard to get an apprenticeship these days). So all I can do is be prepared with a variety of work :hmm:

Rejection isn't a big deal when you're trying to get an apprenticeship, mostly because you already know how difficult it can be to get one. While it can get discouraging, make sure to remember that even if it takes time, you'll get what you want if you keep at it. My best advice would be to really be straightforward with the people you ask. Tell them it's what you really want and ask them what you need to do to prove you are up to the challenge. Let them know that you aren't like everyone else; that you will work hard and do what it takes to become great. If they really don't have the time to offer you an apprenticeship, see if they'll let you do some "free" work around the shop, like sweeping up or something. And in return, they can teach you a technique or two while they are working. I find that if you have the talent and dedication, there are always people who will be willing to give you at least some kind of chance.

If you really can't find anyone to give you a chance, save up for a decent tattoo machine and some fake skin. Have the art professor help you if he's willing to. Practice practice practice. Then, when you start to figure out some techniques on your own, you will have the practice skin tattoos to show in a portfolio as well. I'm sure that I don't have to tell you this, but never practice on a human being. Not only is it dangerous, but if you tell the tattoo artists this, they will see you as reckless and too impatient to learn properly and you'll never get your chance.
